“Everything starts in an empty space, which releases adrenaline in Popenko,” Aleksandra Kostič wrote twenty-five years ago for the exhibitions in Maribor City Hall Rotovž Exhibition Salon and Loža Gallery in Koper. A quarter of a century later, the painter Borut Popenko has returned to the Loža Gallery and Rotovž Exhibition Salon, which is now named UGM Studio. But the starting point remains the same. Since the beginning, Popenko has been interested in the basic elements of painting that arise from empty space, from the materiality of the painting medium to the formation of the painting field. In his exploration of colors and shapes, proportions, compositions, volumes and harmonies, he refers to the abstract painting tradition, from abstract expressionism, color field painting, geometric abstraction to monochrome painting and minimalism. Among his role models, he cites giants of abstract art such as Mark Rothko, Josef Albers, Morris Louis, Ellsworth Kelly, and contemporaries Anish Kapoor, Peter Halley and Gerwald Rockenschaub.
The hosting of the personal exhibition of the Maribor artist Borut Popenko in the Piran Coastal Galleries is an exchange exhibition for the January presentation of the works of the artist Lara Marconi Jeranko from the Littoral region of Slovenia in the premises of the Maribor Art Gallery (UGM), which aims to encourage the cooperation of Slovenian galleries and to promote and valorize current artistic creativity in the area of operation of public institutions.

Dogodek je organiziran v okviru aktivnosti razvoja vsebin zelenega prehoda v okviru Centra znanosti UP projekta Zelena, digitalna in vključujoča Univerza na Primorskem (GDI UP). Cilj pilotnih projektov je opremljanje študentov s kompetencami za zelen in digitalen prehod v Družbo 5.0.

Fish puppet show
The show “Fish” is a short but intense journey of two female sailors. The monotonous everyday routine of the voyage is interrupted by a fish that suddenly jumps out of the sea, triggering a fishing trip that would be hard to imagine… At times, the show resembles a video game, with the two heroines headlong chasing after the fish, forgetting about everything else in the process. But when the game ends, they are not equally happy with the result. Burlesque, theatre of the absurd, music… without words, but with powerful scenes.

KATY MAUREL accompanied by pianist
Katy Maurel, Italian singer with Slovenian roots. She first performed with her father’s ensemble as a child. She studied piano at the Conservatory of Trieste for eight years. Later, she trained in vocal technique and this gave her the basis to start teaching singing herself. Since 2001 she has been collaborating with various pianists, guitarists and ensembles, performing in prestigious venues where top quality live music is performed. She particularly enjoys performing in theatres. Her repertoire includes jazz, bossa nova and pop.
