In 1919, the Italian poet, dandy, and warmonger Gabriele D’Annunzio marched into Rijeka. Present-day residents retell and reinterpret the bizarre story of the 16-month occupation of their city in a satirical and grotesque cinematic journey—a bold, playful, and subversive historical experiment.

You are invited to a free screening of the film Human Flowers of Flesh by director Helena Wittmann, who explores the theme of fluidity in her latest work—the movement of thoughts, mobility and migration, the flow of images and the blurring of boundaries. The film follows a journey across the Mediterranean, from Marseille to Sidi Bel Abbès in Algeria, the former headquarters of the French Foreign Legion.
Opposite the symbol of colonial violence and subjugation of seas, territories, and nations, Wittmann places her own “army” – a community of poets, nomads, and connoisseurs led by a woman. Her crew does not build fortresses or seek colonization, but moves freely between water and land, silence and conversation, history and the present. The film flows like a liquid through different territorial seas and, with sensitive poetics, pays tribute to a world without borders, a world in constant motion.

Viewers learn how Bruno Gröning’s work developed after his death and to what extent help and healing through spiritual means continue to occur today, regardless of religion, skin color, or culture.
Throughout this time, many viewers have reported beneficial effects on their bodies and well-being, and some have even reported unexpected spontaneous healings. The film is in three parts with two short intermissions. Admission is free, but voluntary donations are welcome.

Three short films, imbued with tenderness, humour and the haunting beauty of everyday life in Istria.
Inspired by the famous song by Iztok Mlakar, the animated film Čikorja an’ kafe by Dušan Kastelic tells the story of a simple wedding day of two peasant lovers in a touching and funny way.
Filice, a film by Frane Pekica, paints a portrait of an 87-year-old grandfather through the eyes of his grandson – a stubborn man, farmer and father, while capturing images of a vanishing Istria, where life was once humble but full of genuine human warmth.
Abisini Karp Godina’s essayistic film, enriched by the music of Iztok Mlakar, brings to life the story of the former Trst-Poreč narrow-gauge railway, known as the Parenzana.
The event is part of the East-West: Border through Film and History programme, as part of the European Capital of Culture GO! 2025, and takes place as part of the Weekends on the Edge events at the Karst Edge Visitor Centre.

A quietly moving, beautifully shot pastoral drama told in four chapters set in four seasons by Italian director Maura Delpero, in which the love between a local woman and a newcomer in a remote village in the Italian Alps is about to end 2. Winner of the Silver Lion at Venice and winner of seven David di Donatello statuettes, including Best Film, Director, Screenplay and Cinematography.

The light strokes in the film create a sketch of the artist Milko Bambič (1905-1991) – painter, illustrator, polyglot, polyhistorian, inventor, art critic, writer, pioneer of Slovenian comics and caricature. A designer who was that when the profession did not yet exist. The film uses the textures of historical time and space to colour the playful and independent personality of a controversial artist who has remained on the periphery – relatively unknown in the central Slovenian art scene, but a prominent protagonist in Trieste.
The director Radovan Čok will also be present at the screening.

In the darkness of a steam sauna in the Estonian countryside, women share their deepest secrets and intimate experiences, wash the shame from their bodies and find strength in community… “When I was 11 years old, my grandfather died. My grandmother, aunt and niece and I went to the smoke sauna. There, my grandmother revealed to us that my grandfather had cheated on her. Grandma gave in to her feelings of pain and anger and reconciled with Grandpa so that she could bury him in peace the next day. It was then that I realised that the sauna is not only for cleansing the body, but also for cleansing the soul,” says director Anna Hints.
Short films from the Oriente East / Occidente West retrospective – The border through film and history, looking at life along the border from different perspectives. Abesini Karp Godina’s essay film, accompanied by music by Iztok Mlakar, is about the narrow-gauge Trieste-Poreč railway line, the Parenzana. Poetic Karst from the Italian side shows the nature and symbolism of the Karst. Where is the Iron Curtain? shows life on the border between Italy and Yugoslavia, while Our American Days shows a black-and-white Trieste flooded with the colour of America and swing after the war.

Amanda is a typical 11-year-old, and her friends, their opinions and acceptance mean a lot to her. Due to circumstances, she has to hang out with a new classmate, Lars. He is different and Amanda is afraid he will embarrass her in front of society. Nevertheless, a genuine friendship is born and Amanda soon finds herself under a lot of pressure and faced with a dilemma – should she stand up for herself or give in to the expectations of those around her? A touching and warm film about friendship, acceptance of difference, the disconnect between emotions and societal expectations, and cyber-bullying.
