Exhibition Upright History

A new permanent exhibition about the history of Koper, entitled Upright History, is on view in the city bell tower on Tito Square.

The exhibition invites visitors on a unique journey through one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. The climb up 204 steps is not only a path to a beautiful view of Koper and its surroundings, but also a symbolic journey through the stories, heritage and historical periods that have shaped the city.

CITY BELL TOWER

The Koper bell tower, with its 54-metre-high silhouette, has shaped the image of the old town for centuries. Its origins are believed to date back to the 12th century, and over time it has played an important role in the life of the city.

The tower is also home to the Bell of St. Nazarius, cast in 1333 in Venice, which is considered the oldest bell still in use in Slovenia. In the past, the bells of the city tower accompanied the everyday life of the town’s residents, announced important events and warned of danger.

EXHIBITION UPRIGHT HISTORY

The exhibition Upright History presents the history of Koper and the significance of the city bell tower in an engaging and accessible way. It is designed as an experience that unfolds as visitors make their way up the tower.

Through the exhibition, visitors can discover the city’s stories, its heritage and the role of the bell tower as an important part of Koper’s identity.
