Mirana Likar Bajželj (1961) is a professor of Slovene and lives and works in Ljubljana. Although she started writing only around 2006, the following year she won a prize at the Urška Literary Festival. Two years later, she published a collection of short fiction, Sobotne zgodbe / Saturday Tales (Cankarjeva založba, 2009), which was nominated for Best First Novel and the Fabula Award. She has published two more short story collections, Sedem besed / Seven Words (LUD Literatura, 2011) and Glasovi / Voices (Modrijan, 2015). Her stories have won prizes in several competitions, including the 2015 Forum Tomizza competition with the best short story Lapis Histriae. The focus of this talk will be her first novel Babuškin kovček / Babushka's Suitcase (Modrijan), published last year; a family saga about women of four generations, spanning the entire twentieth century. Like a Russian matryoshka (babushka), the reader is presented with life narratives in a stacked structure, which can be read sequentially or arbitrarily.
The discussion is moderated by Jasna Čebron.
