Welcome to this picturesque historic town, nestled in its lush green surroundings. Serving as a bridge between the Karst and sub-Mediterranean worlds, it is also the gateway to Slovenian Istria.
Ideally situated near Italy and Croatia, Koper offers easy access to a range of fascinating destinations. It’s just an hour’s drive (100 km) from the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, 25 minutes (20 km) from Trieste, and 35 minutes (30 km) from Umag. With Venice a little over two hours away by car, Koper is perfectly positioned at the heart of the northern Adriatic’s top attractions.
CHECK DISTANCES AND PLAN YOUR JOURNEY
The A1 motorway leads to Koper, connecting it with Slovenia’s capital city, Ljubljana (among other cities). If you are coming from Italy, we recommend taking the road connecting Koper with Trieste.
For those coming from Croatia, we recommend the border crossings at Sečovlje, Dragonja, Sočerga, Podgorje, Starod or Jelšane, from where you can continue along the regional roads towards Koper.
Driving on Slovenian motorways and expressways requires a toll sticker as provided for by the Slovenian tolling system. The only exception is a part of the expressway between Koper and Izola. Other roads do not require a toll sticker. You can buy a toll sticker at petrol stations.
Koper has good domestic (e.g. to towns in Slovenian Istria and Ljubljana) and international (e.g. to nearby cities in Italy and Croatia) bus connections.

- Arriva Slovenia – public buses, domestic and international destinations (to Trieste in Italy and, in summer, to Croatian Istria);
- Črnja Tours – international destinations (to Trieste in Italy and Croatian Istria);
- Flixbus – domestic and international destinations;
- Nomago – domestic destinations;
- Ljubljana Bus Station – domestic and international destinations
The main bus station in Koper at Kolodvorska cesta 11 is just a 20-minute walk away from the town centre. Public buses are running to the centre and various other locations in the town. Additionally, there is a taxi rank and a Park and Ride (P&R) car park adjacent to the bus station.
Koper is connected by railway to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, with passenger transport managed by SŽ-Potniški promet d.o.o.
The train station in Koper is just a 20-minute walk from the town centre, with public buses running to the centre and other locations within the town. Located next to the main bus station, the train station also features a taxi rank nearby.

- Aerodrom Portorož, suitable for landing small aircraft – approx. 25 min* by car from Koper;
- Trieste – Ronchi dei Legionari, Italy – approx. 40 min* by car from Koper.
