CHURCH OF THE HOLY TRINITY
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Hrastovlje is a precious cultural landmark in Slovenian Istria, celebrated for its extensive medieval frescoes, including the famous Danse Macabre.
This Gothic masterpiece, erected in the 15th century, is renowned for its exquisite medieval frescoes crafted by John of Kastav. The frescoes inside depict scenes such as the creation of the world, the expulsion of Adam and Eve, the Stations of the Cross, and the Danse Macabre, offering a poignant reflection on the inevitability of mortality across all societal strata. The church is surrounded by 16th-century walls, which were used to defend against Turkish invasions.
The Church of the Holy Trinity is unique for its architecture and frescoes. Constructed from stone with a vaulted roof and a tall bell tower, the church is distinguished by its frescoes, which were completed in 1490. The frescoes, adorned in earthy colors, depict various ecclesiastical motifs including the Apostles, the Coronation of Mary, the Three Kings, the Stations of the Cross, and the Creation of the world. The most renowned motif is the Danse Macabre, depicting a procession of individuals from diverse social classes marching towards death alongside skeletons.
The church is surrounded by a high stone wall with two defensive towers, built in the 16th century to defend against Turkish invasions.
The interior of the church was discovered and restored in 1951 under the direction of Jože Pohlen.
