Former Minorite Monastery and Church of St. Francis
The monastery and the Church of St. Francis represent the oldest Franciscan monastery in Koper, reflecting the rich history of the Franciscan presence in the region and the architectural beauty of the Gothic period.
The Minorite Monastery and the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Koper represent the oldest Franciscan monastery in town, built in the 13th century. The monastery, once a burial place and seat of the Inquisition, now serves as the Koper High School. The Church of St. Francis of Assisi, originally a striking example of Franciscan Gothic architecture, has been beautifully restored and is now utilized for concerts and cultural events. The discovery of Gothic frescoes during the renovation highlights the rich artistic history of the church.
The former Minorite Monastery of St. Francis and the neighboring Church of St. Francis of Assisi, located near Brolo Square, have been integral parts of the spiritual and cultural history of Koper for centuries. Founded in the 13th century, the premises have served various purposes over time, from a spiritual center to an educational institution.
The Church of St. Francis of Assisi, built in 1268, was originally considered an outstanding example of Franciscan Gothic architecture, characterized by its modesty and distinctive beauty. With its three square apses and cross-vaulted ceilings, the church in its original form is a valuable architectural and artistic monument.
With its Baroque transformation in the mid-18th century and subsequent repurposing as a school gym under Austrian rule, the church underwent significant changes. However, a comprehensive restoration between 2013 and 2014 has returned the church to some of its former glory, and the discovery of Gothic frescoes hints at a rich artistic past that had long been hidden from view.
Today, the former church serves as a venue for official functions and events and hosts a wide range of cultural and artistic events, maintaining its place as a central venue for the cultural life of Koper. The Minorite Monastery, now the Koper High School, and the Church of St. Francis of Assisi together form an important part of the city’s historical and cultural heritage, reflecting centuries of spiritual, educational, and artistic development.
The entrance to the former monastery is at Cankar Street 2, and the entrance to the former church, now a venue for official functions and events, is from Martinč Square.
