FRANCISCAN MONASTERY WITH THE CHURCH OF ST. ANNE
The 15th-century monastery exemplifies a rich sacred history and cultural heritage, having served various functions over the centuries, from a monastery to a prison, before ultimately returning to its original spiritual purpose.
St. Anne’s Monastery, once used as a prison, now serves as a spiritual center once again. Built in the 15th century, the building has undergone several renovations and currently functions as a community center, student residence, and event space. The church, originally dedicated to St. Mary of the Angels and now known as St. Anne, contains precious artworks and stands as a testament to the rich sacred environment before its nationalization after World War II.
The Franciscan Monastery with the Church of St. Anne is located on Destradi Square. The monastery building, concealed behind a high wall, dates back to the early 16th century but has undergone several reconstructions over time. The present church was constructed between 1620 and 1627 on the site of a 15th- or 16th-century church that was originally dedicated to St. Mary of the Angels.
The 15th-century monastery also served as a prison in the second half of the 20th century. Until the Second World War, the monastery and church were among the richest sacred environments within the area and beyond, boasting a wealth of treasures including a renowned library and a collection of paintings by artists such as Benedetto Carpaccio, Girolamo Santacroce, Vivarini, Palma Giovane, and others. These artworks adorned the church, while the presbytery housed a large Renaissance triptych by Cima da Conegliano.
Today, the church houses precious late 15th-century Gothic choir-stalls and a Baroque organ. After the Second World War, the monastery was nationalized and turned into a prison. The church was dedicated to St Mary of the Angels until the 16th century, when it was renamed St Anne’s Church.
Today, the restored monastery serves its original purpose. The monastery also houses the Rotunda Center, a student dormitory and an event space.
