GRAVISI – BARBABIANCA PALACE
Home of nobility and art. The Gravisi-Barbabianca Palace, one of the most exquisite Baroque buildings in Koper, seamlessly blends historical heritage with modern cultural life.
The Gravisi-Barbabianca Palace, one of the most beautiful Baroque palaces in Koper, was completed in the early 18th century, with the main hall painted in the 19th century. The scientific and cultural contributions of its former owners, the noble Gravisi-Barbabianca family, have significantly shaped the history of Koper. The two-storey palace, with its beautiful façade, entrance hall, decorative staircase, and intricate wall and ceiling decorations, now serves as the home of the Koper Music School.
The Palace of the Marquises Gravisi-Barbabianca stands as an important part of Koper’s cultural heritage, attracting visitors with its Baroque architecture and rich interior. Built in 1710, the palace stands out for its balanced compositional approach and the extensive gardens that were once part of its courtyard façade.
The interior of the palace is particularly valuable, featuring an entrance hall adorned with a decorative staircase richly decorated with family portraits, along with the main hall on the upper floor. The original decorations and portraits of the family have been preserved on the walls. The ceiling of the main hall, dating from the mid-19th century and painted by the Trieste painter Giuseppe Gatteri, has also been preserved.
The Gravisi-Barbabianca Palace was home to an important noble family that played a key role in the development of Koper’s academic and cultural life, particularly through the Accademia degli Operosi. Today, the palace continues its cultural mission as the headquarters of the Koper Music School.
