BELL TOWER

The Koper Bell Tower, or City Tower, standing 54 meters tall, is a fine example of Romanesque defensive architecture. Its origins are believed to date back to the 12th century, although there is no reliable evidence of this. It was reconstructed between 1418 and 1480, and acquired its present appearance in 1664. The large clock in the middle of the tower dates back to 1463. Originally a freestanding structure, it was connected to the Assumption of Mary Church in 1488.

The bell tower already served as a fortified defensive point during the era of the Patriarchs of Aquileia, and it retained this function in the early Venetian period. On the southern side, it was connected via an arched bridge to the palace of the vice-dominus, which overlooked the passage between the main square and Brolo Square.

In front of the entrance there was a stone staircase where the town crier summoned the townspeople and announced messages and proclamations from the podestà. The bell of St. Nazarus, cast in Venice in 1333, is the oldest functioning bell in Slovenia. The bells in the city tower have regulated urban life throughout the centuries, as they called people to mass, work, and rest, and warned of dangers such as fires, storms, diseases, shipwrecks, fog, and wartime threats.

The City Tower today offers a beautiful view over the city and its surroundings. With its impressive height, it serves as an excellent landmark marking the city center and inviting visitors to explore Koper’s rich history.
