RIŽANA RIVER VALLEY
The Rižana River is the primary source of drinking water in Slovenian Istria and is a key feature of an ecologically significant Natura 2000 site.
The Rižana River Valley is perfect for exploration, especially in summer, offering delightful opportunities to immerse yourself in nature. The area features the “Od mlina do mlina” (From Mill to Mill) trail, providing visitors with insights into the history and operation of the river’s traditional mills.
The Rižana River, which rises in the Hrastovlje Valley, is the most water-abundant river in Slovenian Istria and the main source of drinking water in the area. The source of the river comprises several interconnected springs, with the Zvorček Spring being the most significant. This spring is recognized as a natural heritage site of national importance.
The Rižana River is part of the Natura 2000 site and an ecologically important area, providing a habitat for several endangered species.
In the past, there were many water-powered sawmills and as many as 34 mills on the river. Today, one of these, a mill that is still in operation, is the site of a well-known restaurant. There is also a trout farm at the source of the Rižana River.
