Explore the Karst Edge! Autumn is the perfect time of year to explore Koper and its green countryside, as the balmy temperatures and beautiful colours of nature make for the best conditions for outdoor sporting activities and for sightseeing in the area’s natural and cultural sites. The Karst Edge is a must if you want to experience untouched nature, try your hand at climbing, cycling or hiking, and explore the villages of Slovenian Istria, which hold a wealth of cultural heritage.
Day 1
Spend the first day discovering the villages of Črni Kal and Socerb.
1. The Kraški Rob Visitor Centre
Your adventure begins at the Kraški Rob Visitor Centre, located in the village of Gabrovica near Črni Kal, right under the Črni Kal viaducts. Here, you will be blown away by the stunning views of the Osp Valley. In addition to the magnificent views, there is a tourist information point where you can get all the information you need about hiking and cycling trails that take you through the beautiful nature and picturesque villages of Istria.

2. The Village of Črni Kal – St Valentine’s Church and Benko’s House
Next, head to the village of Črni Kal, home to the beautiful Church of St Valentine. Its unique feature is the leaning bell tower with its ribbed dome, which offers a unique insight into the architecture and history of the area. In the village of Črni Kal you can also visit Benko’s house, built in 1489, which is considered to be the oldest rural house in Slovenia.

3. The Fortress above Črni Kal
Continue your journey to the historic fortress above Črni Kal, where stunning views of the Bay of Koper await you. This fortress, a remnant of the 11th-century Castle of San Sergio, has historically played a key role in controlling strategic routes and protecting against marauding raiders. It was built by Ulrich I, Istrian margrave, to control important routes and protect his estates in Istria. Due to the frequent marauding raids, an inaccessible camp was built under the fortress, where the local population kept their valuables.

4. Socerb – Strmec Castle and the Holy Cave
Top off the day with a visit to Socerb, a medieval village set beneath a cliff edge, featuring typical village architecture. Nearby lies Strmec Castle, also known as Socerb Castle, which served as an important stronghold for centuries and has witnessed several historical events. Due to its prime strategic location, a kaštelir (fortress) was constructed here, followed by a massive, well-fortified castle structure in the Middle Ages, which was used to dominate the trade routes. The castle also houses a restaurant where you can indulge in delicious seafood specialties.
Not far from the castle, you will find the Holy Cave – a karst cave with the only underground church in Slovenia. Legend has it that the martyr of Trieste, St Servul, used the cave as his hiding place. The cave is a popular pilgrimage site and its entrance is located in a grove of trees near the castle. Tours of the cave are available on Sundays at 14:00.
Tip: All the attractions and stops mentioned above are connected by the P3 (Under the Climbing Wall) footpath: https://map.portoroz.si/#tours?tour=pod-plezalno-steno

Day 2
Spend your second day enjoying some fresh air in the open!
Head to Slavnik, the highest peak in all of Slovenian Istria (1028 m), which boasts spectacular views and is known by locals as the Triglav of Istria. If the weather is clear, you can marvel at the Adriatic Sea, the Italian Dolomites, parts of the Carnic and Julian Alps, the Karavanke Mountains, the Kamniško-Savinjske Alps, Nanos, Vremščica, Snežnik and other mountain ranges.
Slavnik is a popular excursion point, known for its panoramic views, some of the most beautiful in the region. At the summit there is a lookout point with a signpost of the peaks that can be seen on a clear day, including Triglav and Marmolada. Several paths lead to Slavnik, the shortest one starting from the village of Podgorje. For an easier ascent, you can follow the western slope from Prešnice, which runs mostly in the shade of hornbeam forests.
Finish the day off with a home-cooked meal. Visit the restaurant Pod Slavnikom, located in the village of Podgorje, and enjoy homemade specialties such as venison or wild boar prosciutto and bear salami. Pre-order their specials, such as bear steak in cranberry sauce with homemade gnocchi. Pasta is another of their specialties, notably the truffle fuži and the homemade ravioli with porcini mushrooms.

Day 3
Spend your last day in Osp, one of Slovenia’s oldest villages, which also boasts one of the most impressive climbing walls in Europe. The horseshoe-shaped wall of Osp is more than 200 metres high. On the north-eastern side of the village, you can find the Mišja peč climbing wall, a semicircular overhanging wall 500 metres wide and more than 200 metres high, which was formed by the collapse of a former cave ceiling. The Mišja peč and Osp walls are considered one of the most important climbing sites in Europe.
