PRETORIAN PALACE
The Pretorian Palace, considered one of the most distinguished palaces in Koper, continually enchants visitors with its elegant appearance and rich history.

The Pretorian Palace, located on the main city square in Koper, is a historical gem of the city, built in the 13th century and redesigned in the mid-15th century. Its architecture, combining late Gothic, Renaissance style and Venetian Gothic, and its interior, arranged for the representative needs of the municipality, tell the story of a long history of power and culture in Koper. Today, the palace hosts a wedding hall, the mayor’s protocol room, the municipal council meeting room, the Tourist Information Centre (TIC), and an old pharmacy, making it one of the most popular attractions in Koper.
The Pretorian Palace closes off the southern side of the main city square – Tito Square. The palace was built in the 13th century and it acquired its present appearance in the mid-15th century. The building is dominated by the late Gothic-Renaissance style and Venetian Gothic. The palace is adorned with an external staircase, a balcony, a distinctive façade, a statue of Justice with a sword, and numerous decorative coats of arms carved with the history of Koper.
In May 2001, the Municipality of Koper, with the renovated Pretorian Palace, gained a town hall in the city center and on the square, which has preserved its original municipal layout to this day.
The importance of the Pretorian Palace is highlighted from the side of Čevljarska Street by several coats of arms and commemorative plaques. The Pretorian Palace acquired its present appearance in the mid-15th century. . The changes to it were introduced by Venice as a form of governance. At that time, the palace served as the seat of the podestà, the captains, and the Great Council. The Great Council was composed of the nobility of Koper, while the podestà combined both civil and military authority. In the architectural structure, a ground-floor loggia can be identified, and on the upper floor the halls of the Great and Small Councils, several auxiliary halls, rooms, and former residential spaces. The interior has been renovated and adapted for the representative needs of the municipality, furnished in a formal style and arranged into a ceremonial hall, offices, and exhibition spaces on the ground floor. At the corner of the side façade of the palace, there is a carved stone plaque with an opening, the characteristic Venetian “bocca del leone,” where anonymous messages for the mayor were once deposited.
The attraction holds the Green Key certificate, a leading standard of excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable operation in the tourism industry.
