Town stories: Tomos Museum preserves the important heritage of Koper

The Tomos History Museum on Kidričeva Street in the heart of Koper brings to life the memories of one of the town’s most iconic tales—the story of the Tomos factory. HOW WAS THE TOMOS HISTORY MUSEUM ESTABLISHED?

For the museum’s founder, Stevo Vujić, preserving the history of Tomos felt like a necessity. “The story of Tomos is simply too big to forget,” he explains. “I am passionate about the history of this factory, having worked there briefly myself, while my father dedicated his entire career to it. I wanted to preserve these memories because they are an important part of the history of Koper, Slovenia, and, not least, the entire region of the former Yugoslavia,” he explains.

“Vujić did not want to limit himself to collecting motorcycles. His goal was to create a space where visitors could experience the story of a town, its people, a system, as well as courage and vision.”

He has been collecting various artifacts for 15 years. “I found many items in the trash when Tomos was closing, while others I purchased from flea markets, the internet, and so on. Over the years, former employees and their descendants have started bringing me various items,” he says, adding that this has deepened his sense of responsibility toward preserving this heritage.

Industrial heritage team

The team managing the museum’s collection is deeply connected to the city and the history it preserves. A strong support for Stevo is his wife, Simona Špeh, who handles the administration and management of the association that operates the museum. Then there’s his daughter, her partner, and the volunteers. “This is not about business; preserving this heritage is a special mission,” says Stevo. He believes the hard work has paid off, as the story has been built over many years.

“I dreamed of working in a space like this before I retired, and now my dream has almost come true.”

Unique aspects of the space dedicated to Tomos

The museum features an original collection of 45 motorcycles, all authentic, along with documents, photographs, marketing materials, and other fascinating artifacts. “We realized that it’s not enough to simply collect motorcycles. Every piece and every document I found is part of the story,” says Vujić. Many visitors come from the former Yugoslav republics, as well as other countries, to explore this unique collection and hear the stories that these items tell. Stevo is thrilled with the excellent attendance and the positive feedback from visitors.

Media support has also played a key role in the museum’s success, with all major media outlets in the former Yugoslavia covering it, something Stevo is incredibly proud of. “In the future, we aim to create a multimedia corner where visitors can experience the history of Tomos through words and images,” he shares.

Enthusiastic feedback by locals and visitors

“Visitors often compliment how beautifully the collection is arranged and how vibrant the atmosphere is,” says Vujić. Many people visit every day, ranging from families with children to individual guests, and, of course, former Tomos employees, who feel a deep sense of nostalgia for the space. He and his wife speak five languages, which is why visitors are so enthusiastic about the presentation. “People often praise our energy and approach. We not only display motorcycles, but share stories that are meaningful to everyone who visits Koper,” says Stevo, who is especially pleased when locals commend the museum.

The Tomos Museum is situated in an exceptional location in the town center, where visitors can enjoy a sense of tranquility while exploring the history and culture of Koper. “Koper is a town that offers peace, yet is also rich in stories and attractions. What truly makes it special, however, are its large squares, which are uncommon in such small towns. Visitors always compliment this,” he says.

“Koper has everything that big cities offer: excellent infrastructure, the perfect balance of activity, all while preserving a sense of warmth and familiarity. We have just the right amount of everything. No wonder people want to stay here forever.”

What else to see in Koper’s town centre?

Visitors shouldn’t miss other attractions in the town center, such as Tito Square, the bell tower, the Praetorian Palace, the viewpoint overlooking the Port of Koper, as well as dining on fresh fish along the seafront. And be sure to visit the nearby Regional Museum. “I always recommend taking a stroll along Čevljarska ulica to Prešeren Square,” says Stevo. Above all, he advises everyone to explore the town with open eyes, as preserved heritage can be found at every corner. He is pleased that the visitors quickly realize they can easily spend more than just one day here.
