In accordance with the program mission of the institution, which is to monitor and present artists who live and create in the local region, this year we are presenting a selection of works by the Slovenian coastal painter Aleš Sedmak (1952, Postojna). Since studying at the Department of Painting at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts, where he graduated in 1980, he has been continuously creating as a painter, graphic artist, draftsman, illustrator, designer, pedagogue, mentor and organizer of educational workshops and events.

Already during his studies, he was one of the founders of the SOG workshop at the Forum student association. From 1983 to 1987, he was the president of the Fine Artists Society of the Slovene Littoral (DLUSO). He was also one of the organizers of the establishment of the Society’s Insula Gallery in Izola (1987) and a quarter of a century ago a program consultant for the establishment of an Art School within Koper High School. From 2011 to 2021, he was a president of the Slovenian Association of Fine Arts Societies (ZDSLU).

For sixteen years he was the head of the Kaverljag project as the only manifestation of its kind with the international participation of professors and students; his studio in this Istrian hamlet in the middle of lush nature above the valley of the river Dragonja has been a venue for unique educational camps, with an emphasis on current topics, especially ecology, the usefulness of products and the connection and synergy of fine arts and various scientific sciences.
