HISTORY OF KOPER
Once an island, Koper boasts a rich history that stretches back to Roman times. Originally known as Aegida, the settlement on which the town now stands was called Capris during Roman times, later Insula Capraria (Goat Island), and was referred to as Iustinopolis by the Byzantines. The Venetians, who had a significant influence on the region, named it Capo d’Istria (Head of Istria). This name, along with its Slovene counterpart Koper, continues to be used today.
