The stories of the Istrians and their way of life are told in the unique collections on display in the House of Bardinc, in Lopar, a typical Mediterranean house whose primary material is stone.

It was restored in 1999 by the villagers, who contributed documents, photographs and various objects to present local history and ethnology.

The inhabitants of Lopar say that they live on a donkey’s back, so it is not unusual that they chose a donkey as their mascot.

The house of Bardinac was built in 1861 and is the oldest building in the village. It houses a black Istrian kitchen, a wine cellar with the oldest wine press in Primorska, a collection of homemade wine, and in the courtyard is the oldest farmhouse in Slovenia, dating back to 1803.

Throughout the year, the house, all its rooms and the courtyard are the venue for various cultural events related to the Istrian people, their customs, traditions and historical memory.

The following events are planned for the summer months:

Thursday, 27 July 2023;

Open Day of the House of Badrinec and the Church of St. Jeruf

  • Guided tours; from 10:00 – 12:00 and from 17:00 – 20:00 (telling the story of the Istrian donkey and other joke stories, and viewing the art work of primary school pupils on the theme of the International Year of Cereals-judgement and socialising).

Traditional shagra in a cultural guise

  • 10:00 am to 12:00 pm courtyard of the House of Bardinac, Lopar guided tours; drawing workshop on the theme of flowers and cereals by the village children;
  • from 17:00 to 18:30, visit of the exhibitions and creations, lottery;
  • at 19:00: Holy Mass, procession, gathering with guitarists and accordion and tea party with lemon based sweets.

“TOURISM DAY”

  • Open Day – guided tours of the House of Bardinc and promotion of the P7 route from 15:00 – 20:00, making rag dolls, socialising with the sounds of the accordion, cold lemonade, candy, fruit and wine.

Opening hours for visiting the House of Bardinc: Monday to Friday from 17:00 to 19:00; on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays also from 10:00 to 12:00 (or by prior appointment).
