The sea and its shores have been recognised as an area of ecological importance, providing shelter for no less than 1,800 plant and animal species. The loggerhead turtle and the common bottlenose dolphin are also regular inhabitants of our seas.
In the bay is another special area of ecological importance: the habitat of the Posidonia oceanica plant.
Between Koper and Izola, you can find a pine tree avenue (a place of local natural value), while in the vicinity of Žusterna, you can see another feature of the region, also characterised as a place of natural value: a flysch cliff.
